Mareike Wenzel
The actress and performance artist Mareike Wenzel has been a member of the Danish/Austrian performance collective SIGNA since 2007. Her work with SIGNA has received numerous awards (Berliner Theatertreffen, Reumert Award, etc.) and has taken her to renowned theatres such as the Volksbühne Berlin, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Salzburg Festival, Republique Theatre, etc. In her own work, Mareike deals strongly with feminist themes and the narration and definition of spaces. She works biographically and through documentaries in public spaces and links places and spaces with different narratives. Since 2010, she has worked repeatedly in Georgia, where she initiated, among other things, the feminist performance project “Salon Tbilisi Berlin” – an ongoing project with female authors from Berlin and Tbilisi. She teaches performance at the Center of Contemporary Art Tbilisi and has developed various performance formats in public spaces in collaboration with the women’s rights organisation WISG. Mareike’s work has been invited to the 2nd Tbilisi Triennial and the FLARE15 Festival, among other events. In 2017, Mareike also founded the Georgian children’s theatre Aitsona-Daitsona, which tours modern children’s plays through Georgia.
Mareike is currently a scholarship holder for the course “Artistic Interventions in Cultural Education” at the University of Hildesheim.
